Sheepdog Handlers

Dewi Jenkins

Dewi Jenkins lives on the family farm in the hills above Aberystwyth where they farm prize winning Welsh Mountain sheep and Welsh Black cattle, carrying the prefix of Tynygraig, which is also used on the dogs he has bred. Tynygraig sheep have been supreme Champions at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show and both sheep and cattle have won many prizes.

The farm consists of hill land and lower grazing, providing work opportunities and training facilities for his dogs.

Dewi also won the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show’s ‘Dr Emrys Evans’ award

This was for shepherding skills which included the training and working of sheepdogs, the shearing of the home farm’s 800 sheep and the breeding and showing of top class breeding flocks.

While training and trialling takes most of his time, Dewi is still working on the farm and although doesn’t compete as much in the shearing world, he now commentates on the shearing, especially speed shearing.

The Young Farmer’s Club especially his local club, Talybont, has been instrumental in promoting his farming lifestyle and his introduction into Sheep Dog Trials. He was a member from the age of 11 - 26 yrs. old with only a one year’s break when he was shearing in New Zealand. 2017 saw Dewi achieve the Young Farmer of the Year.

Welsh is Dewi’s first language yet he trains his dogs in English to facilitate the world-wide market

Training, working and trialling dogs is his passion, one that started at the age of 8yrs old with Tyngraig Sam, a Welsh sheepdog, not a Border Collie. He was keen and at the age of 14 yrs, competed locally with Sam against Border Collies and winning. Dai Jones of Cefn Gwlad fame, local farmer and television personality, who also ran dogs, saw how keen Dewi was and bought him a pup called Moss. Moss went on to start Dewi on his journey to the top where he represented Wales in the Young Handlers Competition in Scotland, going from there to represent his country on numerous occasions.

2022 has been an exceptional year for Dewi

Especially when his dream came true and he won the International Supreme Championship  Sheep Dog Trials with Jock up in Castle Howard, Yorkshire; competing against some of the best handlers in the world. 2022 also saw him represent Wales in One Man and His Dog and win the N Wales Victor Ludorum with a staggering amount of successes.

‘The Welsh Wizard’ as he has been referred to has re-written the record books with the sale of Kim, a 12 month old sheepdog who earned him a world record £27,100. Dewi continues to breed and train sheepdogs, exporting them all over the world and providing a diversification income for the farm.

His dogs are trained to the highest level, providing both farmers and others with a properly trained dog that can do the jobs required without the stress to the dog, the handler or the stock, ultimately improving the welfare and value of a good well trained dog.
